Phone Etiquette

Three times in the past week or so I have been in the bathroom at work with a student who is on the phone. I can't imagine talking to someone on the phone while using the bathroom, or even being on the phone with someone who is in a bathroom. It just seems rude to me. Have our lives become so busy that the only time we have to talk to people is when we're sitting in a bathroom? Or is it just that college students these days seems to have cell phones glued to their ears?

Three times in about 5-7 work days I have observed this. Is this now acceptable behavior?? Has anyone else observed this?

For your information, please don't call me if you are in the bathroom and I promise never to call anyone in the reverse situation.

  1. Wow, I am amazed that you are just now seeing such thing. It does seem to becoming much more the norm. I noticed it at my last job and before. I have always thought it to be quite insane myself. I am amazed at the number of students who get up out of class to answer their cell phone or who during every break have to be on the phone. One step out of the classroom and the phone is to the ear. It is totally insane. I am not even up with walking across campus on it. Though I have been caught a couple times in those situations on the phone, well not in the restroom but the others, but I usually had a good reason for doing it. The worlds reliance on technology is 100% insane.

  2. It's not the first time I've seen this sort of thing. I have seen people on their phone in the restroom before, for me it was that I saw it 3 times within just a few days of each other. Yes, students are on their phones around campus all the time!! It is truly amazing and I'm surprised more of them don't get hit while crossing the street. Also, if they aren't on the phone, they are probably text messaging people from it (which they can probably do during class as well!). Personally, I don't need to be in touch with everyone I know all the time. Nothing wrong with a little bit of alone time now and again.
